Effective Assessment and Evaluation of Student Outcome Attainment - Hanoi University of Industry
On January 11 and 13, 2022, Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI) in collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU) and BUILD-IT Project organized a webinar "Effective Assessment and Evaluation of Student Outcome Attainment" with the participation of 50 HaUI officials and lecturers.
This workshop is designed for HaUI Leaders/Faculty/QA Professionals seeking expertise in the effective and efficient assessment of student attainment of program-level student outcomes.
Participants will review ABET-compliant operating definitions of “assessment,” “evaluation,” and “attainment,” which may vary from definitions used by lecturers when teaching their courses. This workshop will develop the HaUI team's expertise in planning effective and efficient assessment of student attainment of program-level student outcomes using course learning outcomes (as shown on course syllabi) as a mechanism. The outcome will be more effective and efficient assessment processes to improve teaching/student learning and support ABET evaluation preparations.
According to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Scott Danielson - ASU expert student outcomes include:
Student Outcome 1: An ability to apply knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
Student Outcome 2: An ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly-defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline.
Student Outcome 3: An ability to apply written, oral, and graphical communication in broadly-defined technical and non-technical environments; and an ability to identify and use appropriate technical literature.
Student Outcome 4: An ability to conduct standard tests, measurements, and experiments and to analyze and interpret the results to improve processes.
Student Outcome 5: An ability to function effectively as a member as well as a leader on technical teams.
After participating in the webinar, the lecturers can implement the following activities:
- Developing performance indicators linked between program student outcomes and course learning outcomes
- Developing an assessment planning worksheet for a specific program-level student outcome.
- Evaluating assessment data for purposes of making program improvement decisions.
- Developing more effective and efficient assessment processes that can improve teaching/student learning and support AUN-QA, especially the expected revisions of AUN-QA guidelines, and ABET evaluation preparations.
- Using scores of students' work as direct evidence for assessment data.
