A passion for fashion design: A story of My Nhat

To take the pen to draw or to take the scissor to cut, to touch the garment and smell the unique fragrance of new textile and to bath in the color of fashion... are always the happiness to My Nhat. It is the passionate share from the senior student from The Faculty of Garment Technology and Fashion Design. The girl really had her whole youth while studying Fashion Design at Hanoi University of Industry.

The academic year 2021 – 2022 marks an important milestone to My Nhat. It is the last year of her being a student in a university, the year with many experiences, challenges and opportunities; she had to exert herself to the utmost, in order to finish the last credits and graduate. Over the long 3 years journey previously, My Nhat saw herself had grown up much more and shared something about it, about her life and her passion for fashion design.

My Nhat – the charming girl in love with fashion design.

When I was a child, I beg the tailors for some pieces of cloth and practiced making the doll’s clothes from it. I’m obsessed with drawing and designing.I draw with passionate the cloth of characters from cartoons, singers, actors and actress. When I grow up, I want to turn those creative products into reality and I dream about someday, everyone liked and so pleased and comfortable in the cloth designed by me. In my opinion, “Fashion is where to show the strong, escalated emotion in design, the characteristic and style of the wearer. Therefore, fashion is never the limit but the endless source of creative and nonstop innovation”. That’s why I chose the Faculty of Fashion Design at Hanoi University of Industry – where my passion and my creativity can be free in an education environment that is actively, positively, and full of new things.

When searching on the Internet for the universities and colleges that have Fashion Design Faculty, I come to know The Faculty of Garment Technology and Fashion Design. And when go to the university, my first impression was the dedicationof the lecturers and the volunteers (students); they always encourage the student to live and shine bright with passion.

Faculty of Garment Technology and Fashion Design – where My Nhat put into all of her passion.

At the Faculty of Garment Technology and Fashion Design – Hanoi University of Industry, the student is instructed to make and complete fashion products in aclosed process from collecting ideas, setting symbols, developing models, choosing material, sewing and accomplishing... to mixing the accessories, preparing theposter and presenting the product.

I has studied for 3 years in many subjects: Drawing (the first subject that give me the way to think about shapes and the human body, it is also the panel to accomplish model to fit with vary body shape) Fashion History (bring me the source of passion and deeper knowledge about how fashion was born and develop), Material Forming (give me thefreedom to create and help me know how to make my cloth leave an unforgettable impression to the viewer), Visual Principles, Fashion Trend, Fashion Business, Organizing Fashion Event... All of the above subjects bring me really useful knowledge from many sources.

The content always follows straight and continuously update news about fashion trend over the world. Besides the professional knowledge, in order to meet the more-and-more high demand of the job, HaUI students are also trained in soft skills such as group working, presenting... and using software for fashion designing like Adobe Illustrator or Lectra.

In the first semester, the real product that we must complete is personal protective clothing for the mechanic. Many people will raise question why the personal protective clothing, but not T-shirt, chemise or a “fashion-looking” body-con dress. The answer is, if students want to know how to create an impressive fashion product and leave aunique impression for the viewer, the first thing for them to learn is to be meticulous and careful at every phase with this kind of clothing. At this first stage, alot of difficulties may occur in sewing and accomplishing, but thanks to the whole-hearted instruction from the lecturers, we were continuously given energy and can accomplish the product at best.

Then come new subjects, new projects like Designing Fashion for the kid, Designing fashion for seasons, Designing Fashion for The Ball... To prove the result in learning those subjects, at the end of each semester, students have to complete a project where they must make and accomplish a product and record the entire process from researching, collecting ideas, developing models, choosing materials, sewing, preparing the poster. I remembered the days of getting up early and going to bed late, working over the sewing machine until feeling backache, going around with my old motorbike “super cub” to make the buttonhole, print poster and embroider. I have to admit that the pressure of project, ofdeadlines are something unique when you study Fashion Design. It often makes me chill when I recall that time, but “pressure make diamond”, if I have to choose one more time, I still study this sector.

Many people ask me whether is all of the fashion design student has strong characteristic, haughty and dress cool, or is the competition high in this sector. I think the competition is real, but we areall ready to give support and help each other in every situation. The group tasks helped us know each other better and together we overcome challenges.

The unforgettable memories with friends.

I especially valued the 3 years studying at the university: each lesson is practical; the education environment is full of energy and highly effective. Particularly, student rarely have to follow the course and be able to “express” all of their creativity.

In the meantime, the Covid-19 pandemic still exists; everything is more and more difficult. Therefore, being a senior student, I have to strive more, try more to accomplish the important mission of the student, to complete the graduation thesis. I think that not only me, but everyone hasa good dream. The final result of the dream is not something unreal or strange, but when we believe and exert ourselves, we will succeed.

Although I’m not the best in this sector I hope my sharing will encourage those whopassionate with the fashion, especially Fashion Design at Hanoi University of Industry.
