3+1 Joint Program – A Remarkable Journey of HaUI Students in China

Phạm Trà My, former President of the Student Association of the School of Foreign Languages and Tourism under Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI), is currently a final-year student majoring in Chinese Linguistics under the 3+1 joint program between HaUI and Guangxi University of Science and Technology (China). Her academic journey and experiences in China have not only provided her with solid expertise but also invaluable insights into culture, people, and remarkable personal growth.

Initially, Trà My felt apprehensive about transitioning to an entirely new environment in China. However, her strong academic foundation built over three years at HaUI, coupled with the unwavering support of her family, lecturers, and peers, provided her with the confidence to embrace this opportunity. The initial apprehension soon gave way to excitement as she immersed herself in a dynamic and stimulating learning experience.
According to Trà My, the curriculum at Guangxi University of Science and Technology is not vastly different from that in Vietnam. The class schedule is relatively flexible, with 40-minute sessions and approximately two to three sessions each morning and afternoon. In addition to specialized knowledge, she has honed her listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills. Notably, the university offers international students valuable extracurricular opportunities such as factory visits and cultural immersion activities. One interesting aspect is that international students can communicate entirely in Mandarin, contrary to initial concerns that some local communities might only speak dialects.

Beyond academics, Trà My found herself captivated by the cultural vibrancy of Guangxi. The province’s colorful festivals, lively streets, and welcoming locals left an indelible mark on her experience. She was particularly fascinated by the local walking culture, a sustainable, cost-effective means of exploring the city while fostering social interactions. This daily routine allowed her to immerse herself in the rhythm of local life, further enriching her study abroad experience.

As she prepares to return to Vietnam to complete her degree, Trà My is already planning her next steps. With aspirations to pursue a master’s degree in Chinese Linguistics, she hopes to further her expertise while deepening her understanding of Chinese culture. Her time in China has not only strengthened her academic foundation but has also fueled her passion for language and cross-cultural exchange.
