HaUI students apply AI to develop exam cheating detection software
A group of students from the Faculty of Information Technology, Hanoi University of Industry applied artificial intelligence (AI) to develop exam cheating detection software with high accuracy. The software is expected to be put into use within the University, and there has been a company specializing in camera research offering to cooperate and develop the project.
With this software, each exam room only needs 1 proctor instead of 3 to 4 proctors as before
On January 12, talking to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper, Dr. Dang Trong Hop, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology (IT Faculty), Hanoi University of Industry, said that from a scientific research project of a group of students in the faculty, the faculty is conducting further testing steps to serve the supervision of examination, training and security activities of the University.
Accordingly, this scientific topic is called: "Application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help detect exam cheating", carried out by a group of 5 students including Hoang Tung Lam, Bui Ngoc Hai, Nguyen Duc Linh (Class of Computer Science 1 of K12); Dao Le Huy (Class of Computer Science 2 of K12) and Phan Thanh Trung (Class of Information Technology 4 of K12) under the guidance of Dr. Vu Viet Thang - lecturer of the Faculty of Information Technology.

According to the team, this software uses the input of images captured from surveillance cameras. From the recorded movements, the research team came up with a second algorithm, analyzing and identifying abnormal behaviors during the exam. The notice will then be sent to the proctor. With this software, each exam room only needs 1 proctor to cover the room instead of 3 to 4 proctors as before.
“For example, with an exam room with only one proctor, when the proctor is not paying attention, candidates can turn sideways, look at or do something, but with this system, all activities and gestures are monitored all the time, and analyzed and evaluated at the same time. The students themselves, when they know that such a system exists, their thoughts about cheating also decrease. This is a very effective support system for the examination boards,” said Dr. Vu Viet Thang.
Evaluating this research topic, Dr. Dang Trong Hop, Dean of the IT Faculty, said that the application of AI in behavioral monitoring is a research direction with great potential. It can be also applied to many areas of life.

“Besides the expected use of the software in training and examination activities of the University, a number of companies are also contacting the research team to propose the cooperation for development. For example, there is a company specializing in researching on security cameras ask the team about how to combine that technology with home cameras. Currently, children often study online at home, while their parents at work are keen to know if the children at home are studying seriously or not. This software can monitor learners all the time and make assessments with high accuracy”, added Dr. Dang Trong Hop.
Many students study AI, IoT, Blockchain
According to a representative of the IT Faculty (Hanoi University of Industry), the faculty currently has 4000 students studying and the percentage of students who have participated in scientific research is 10% (equivalent to about 400 students).
"Among a total of 59 scientific research projects of IT students in 2021, there are many research topics in new fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), IoT or Blockchain", Dr. Dang Trong Hop, Dean of IT Faculty said.
