A group of talented students from the Faculty of Garment Technology and Fashion Design at Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI) has made waves by turning old jeans into unique and colorful fashion handbags. This innovative project earned them the Second Prize at the XV Student Scientific Research Conference for the 2023-2024 academic year. The team, consisting of Ha Thi Hai Yen, Vu Thi Minh Thu, Doan Thi Kieu Trinh, Ngo Thu Thuy, and Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung, worked under the expert guidance of MSc. Hoang Thi Thanh Luyen. Their research focuses on creating sustainable and fashionable bag designs that resonate with the young women of Hanoi, contributing to the growing trend of environmentally conscious fashion.

Recycled Fashion: A Step Towards Green and Sustainable Development

The concept of recycled fashion is closely aligned with the principles of green and sustainable development. By repurposing old materials into new, stylish products, the HaUI students are contributing to a growing global movement that values sustainability in fashion.

Ha Thi Hai Yen, the head of the research team, explained their motivation for choosing this innovative topic: "Vietnamese fashion, along with the global industry, is increasingly focused on green and sustainable development. Sustainable fashion has been a topic of significant discussion worldwide for decades. This new direction in the fashion industry inspired our team to create environmentally friendly products."

The team's efforts reflect a broader trend in fashion, where designers and consumers alike are becoming more conscious of the environmental impact of their choices. By turning waste into fashion, they are helping to reduce the industry's carbon footprint and promote a more sustainable way of living.

From Research to Start-Up: Commercializing Sustainable Fashion

The success of the project has not only brought the students academic recognition but also opened up opportunities for commercialization. To bring their innovative products to the market, the research team established a fan page on Facebook called "Hana's Bag." This platform allows them to connect with customers who are interested in sustainable fashion and eco-friendly products.

Hai Yen shared insights into their approach to commercialization: "We have applied a continuous product development process, using customer feedback to improve and perfect our products." This customer-centric approach ensures that the bags meet the needs and preferences of their target audience, making them both practical and stylish.

Looking ahead, the team has ambitious plans for the future. They are working on designing and launching a larger handbag that integrates a backup charging feature. This innovative design aims to address a common problem—running out of battery on the go—by providing a convenient solution for charging electronic devices such as phones, AirPods, smartwatches, and tablets.
