International conference on Trends of modern linguistics: Theoretical and applied

The international conference on trends in modern linguistics has contributed many new, in-depth solutions that align with the trends in language training and teaching, emphasizing practical applications.

International conference on “Trends of Modern Linguistics: Theoretical and Applied” was organized by School of Foreign Languages and Tourism, Hanoi University of Industry. Given the context of the university currently offering bachelor's degrees in Applied Linguistics, Vietnamese language and culture for foreigners, and aiming to provide master's and doctoral programs in applied linguistics in the future, the conference provided an opportunity for experts, researchers, and lecturers to exchange ideas with leading scholars both domestically and internationally.

Previously, during the Preliminary Conference days (November 30th and December 1st), renowned scholars from Australia and Thailand engaged in discussions and shared insights on the latest developments in systemic functional linguistics. The focus was on language assessment, discourse areas, multimodal discourse, and accompanied language.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Lan Anh, Dean of the Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture Faculty at the School of Foreign Languages and Tourism, mentioned: 'The conference has received nearly 160 high-quality scientific reports from scientists, scholars, and teachers from reputable universities, colleges, and academies both domestically and internationally. The authors come from different regions, and foreign scholars come from countries such as the United States, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea...

There are many world-leading scholars in Functional Systemic Linguistics, such as James Robert Martin, Len Unsworth, Sue Hood, Georgia Carr, Yaegan Doran, Lorenzo Logi, in generative grammar like Nigel Duffield, and in experimental phonetics and instrumentational linguistics like Andrea Hoa Pham... The articles are very diverse, covering various areas of modern linguistics. After the plenary session with three presentations by Prof. J.R Martin (Australia), Prof. Nigel Duffield (Japan), Prof. Dinh Van Duc (Vietnam), the conference was divided into four subcommittees to announce high-quality reports, receiving high praise from expert reviewers.

During the conference, scientists and scholars focused on discussing and clarifying the main topics of the conference theme: 'The steps of new developments in Functional Systemic Linguistics and its applications (applications in multimodal text, discourse analysis, evaluative linguistics, translation, artificial intelligence applications,...). Interdisciplinary linguistic issues (cultural linguistics, anthropological linguistics, social pragmatics,...) aimed to answer modern linguistic questions: Trends and solutions to some current issues in interdisciplinary linguistics; determining the nature of the Vietnamese language and culture in contact with regional and global languages.

In addition, there are also applications of linguistics for teaching Vietnamese in the new general education program (issued in 2018) as well as teaching ethnic languages in Vietnam for minority ethnic groups (Kho-Me, Thai, Mnong,...), and foreign language teaching in universities and high schools. The application of information technology in Vietnamese language teaching research, such as machine translation, corpus linguistics, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence applications in teaching.
