The Spirit of Lifelong Learning: A Gift from HaUI to Mozambique
This is how Ildo Zidane De Alcete Primeiro, a young man from the Republic of Mozambique who has spent seven years living and studying in Vietnam, describes his experience during the evaluation of his master’s thesis in Electrical Engineering at Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI).
In 2017, Zidane arrived in Vietnam to embark on his studies. After a year of learning Vietnamese, he was profoundly impressed by the hospitality and friendliness of the Vietnamese people, as well as the richness and diversity of Vietnam's culture. The young man from Mozambique was awarded a full government scholarship to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering at HaUI. His four undergraduate years offered him invaluable exposure to Vietnam’s dynamic education system, which opened many doors for learning and growth, allowing him to cultivate a spirit of creativity and adaptability.
Zidane participated in HaUI’s “Spring Reunion 2023” program, an event showcasing the cultural beauty of traditional Tet celebrations in rural Vietnam.
“HaUI offers an open educational environment. The library is illuminated from morning till night, allowing me to study at any time. Some of my courses were available online, making learning more accessible than ever,” Zidane shared.
After completing his undergraduate thesis, titled Designing a Grid-Connected Solar Power System to Supply Electricity for a Factory with a Capacity Below 2MW, Zidane decided to further his education by pursuing a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at HaUI.
“HaUI boasts a faculty of seasoned researchers and academics who helped me formulate research questions, sparked my curiosity, and inspired me to develop applications beneficial to Mozambique,” Zidane explained his decision.

Zidane’s master’s thesis, Analyzing the Impact of Solar Power on Protection Coordination in Mozambique’s Distribution Grid, was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Trong Chuong, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at HaUI, and Dr. Ninh Van Nam, Deputy Head of the Industrial Power Department. The evaluation committee praised his thesis for its practical application, originality, and scientific value. The research provides critical insights for Mozambique’s grid operators, helping them choose protective devices and coordinate relay protection for distribution lines with integrated solar power.

Currently, Zidane is an Electrical Engineer at Tazetta Resources Ltd, a mining company based in Quelimane, Mozambique.
Mozambique, endowed with abundant solar energy resources, is striving to harness clean energy to address power shortages and drive economic growth. Situated in the tropics, Mozambique benefits from ample year-round sunlight. The government is actively promoting large-scale solar projects and supporting smaller household solar initiatives. Solar energy not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also creates jobs and fosters the development of a renewable energy industry. However, to fully capitalize on its solar potential, Mozambique must continue to invest in infrastructure, workforce training, and attract additional international investors. The nation’s economic growth, particularly in the rapidly expanding mining and renewable energy sectors, has increased demand for highly skilled professionals in industrial engineering.
HaUI’s master’s program in Electrical Engineering goes beyond delivering technical expertise. It encourages students to engage in research and seek solutions to real-world energy challenges. Research topics are oriented toward pressing issues such as renewable energy, smart grid management, and energy efficiency optimization, contributing to global energy solutions. Additionally, the program provides opportunities for students to participate in international research projects, collaborate with top energy experts, access cutting-edge knowledge, and build independent research capabilities.
